Port Ellen Distillery

    The Legendary Return

    Port Ellen, South Coast
    Founded 1825
    Status: Reopened 2024

    History & Heritage

Founded in 1825 by Alexander Kerr MacKay, Port Ellen Distillery was once a prominent producer on Islay's south coast. Under the leadership of John Ramsay in the late 19th century, it became one of Scotland's most innovative distilleries, pioneering the use of the Coffey still and spirit safe.

Production ceased in 1983 during industry rationalization, but Port Ellen's legend only grew. Annual limited releases of remaining stocks became some of the world's most sought-after whiskies, with bottles commanding thousands of pounds at auction.

After four decades of silence, Port Ellen triumphantly reopened in March 2024 following Diageo's extensive reconstruction. The distillery has been re-envisioned as a trailblazing facility that merges traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge innovation.
